CD Projekt Red is setting a lofty goal for  the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077  game with the studio aiming to match its quality with Red Dead Redemption 2. CD Projekt Red CEO Adam Kiciński made the statement in a call earlier this week after being asked what the studio had learned from the release of Red Dead Redemption 2.

Cyberpunk 2077 is the massive follow-up to CD Projekt Red’s last critically-acclaimed open world RPG, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Cyberpunk 2077 will see the studio tackle a very different universe, however, exchanging fantasy monsters and swordplay with a futuristic cyberpunk dystopia, complete with cars, guns, and biomedical implants. The game was first revealed in 2013, and does not currently have a confirmed release date. Now, it appears that its creators have high standards when it comes to the game’s quality.

During a call with brokerage house Vestor DM, Kiciński was prompted into the comparison between Cyberpunk 2077 and Red Dead Redemption 2 after he was asked whether or not CD Projekt Red’s title could manage to earn a similar Metacritic score. For reference, Red Dead Redemption 2 earned a 97 on Metacritic on release, while The Witcher 3 currently has a Metacritic score of 92. Kiciński explained that “quality is of paramount importance” and that CD Projekt Red strives “to publish games which are as refined as Red Dead Rdemption 2, and recent Rockstar releases in general.”

Kiciński expanded on exactly what he meant by the need to publish “extraordinary” games as well, suggesting that in a market that sees companies competing with each other for the limited amounts of time consumers have, being “among the best” tends to pay off. He added that gamers “tend to focus more and more on hit releases.” That said, Red Dead Redemption 2 ran into issues when it was revealed that its developers were working 100-hour weeks prior to its release, so its development wasn’t without flaws.

Predictably, Kiciński also played coy about where Cyberpunk 2077 is in terms of its development, something that CD Projekt Red has been doing since the game was first announced - although the developer did allow a select few to go hands-on with the title earlier this summer, indicating that the title is making some heady progress. Kiciński stated that CD Projekt Red is not currently planning to make any announcements, but that fans should expect “further content.” He also stated that the company has remained adamant that it will not “announce announcements,” instead preferring to only release statements when there is something meaningful to show.

There’s an unspoken expectation that Cyberpunk 2077 will probably release sometime during 2020. If Kiciński is welcoming comparisons to Red Dead Redemption 2’s level of quality, then fans should be excited. That kind of confidence from a CEO as experienced and particular as Kiciński can only mean good things for Cyberpunk 2077’s future.
