Fans who are disappointed about the Cyberpunk 2077 release delay will find themselves even more upset that multiplayer won’t be coming for a long time yet. The game is the next big offering from CD Projekt RED, who produced the immensely popular Witcher series. Fans have eagerly awaited the release of Cyberpunk 2077, but unfortunately, with disappointment comes more disappointment.

The single-player Cyberpunk 2077 was delayed from its original release date of April 16th until five months later, on September 17th. The game takes place in the fictional Californian megalopolis of Night City in a dystopian future. The United States government has all but collapsed following its ill-advised intervention in a war in Central America. The government lives on, but only barely - and with the help of greedy and corrupt super-corporations where things like cybernetic implants are the norm. The game has a lot for players to look forward to: a well-respected developer, an involved and interesting plotline, and a heavy dose of popular actor Keanu Reeves. On top of that, Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay footage has generally been well-received.

CD Projekt RED senior vice president of business development (and board of directors member) Michael Nowakowski broke fans’ hearts a little more during a conference call with investors. The audio detailing the Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer release date info was shared to the internet on Thursday. While investors and those eagerly awaiting an opportunity to play the game may have hoped for some good news, they learned that Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer won’t be coming for a long time. In fact, it’s not even on the table until “after 2021,” Polygon reports.

Citing the delayed release date and “the series of events [they] expect to occur after that date,” Nowakowski says that “2021 appears unlikely as a release date for the Cyberpunk multiplayer.” The good news is that Nowakowski is “confident the single-player game will be released on the 17th of September.” Although the game is in a state where it is complete and playable, the company thinks there is still work to be done, and when announcing the delay they said, “We want Cyberpunk 2077 to be our crowning achievement for this generation and postponing launch will give us the precious months we need to make the game perfect.”

The Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer component was initially expected in 2021, but now it seems that 2022 is an early estimate. While the delays are disappointing to many, CD Projekt RED seems focused on making Cyberpunk 2077 a great game. Given the number of massive disappointments in recent years like Fallout 76 and Mass Effect: Andromeda, it behooves gamers to give them the breathing room to polish the game as they need to. If the quality is as expected, the wait will be well worth it.
