Jeff Wadlow is diving back into the comic book movie realm to direct Danger Girl, a live-action take on the hit 90s comic. The first issue of J. Scott Campbell and Andy Hartnell’s action/spy comic was released in 1998, but the original run only lasted seven issues. The story follows an all-female team of spies who save the world time and time again. After the twist-filled story came to a close, the Danger Girl world has continued to live on thanks to one-shots and special mini-series.
In the comics, the team mainly consists of three women - Abbey Chase, Sydney Savage, and Sonya Savage - who are equally deadly and stunning. Together they are Danger Girl Freelance Operations Limited and led by a former British Secret Service Agent named Deuce, while also getting help from teenage genius Silicon Valerie. With the series often being compared to Charlie’s Angels, James Bond, and Indiana Jones, it was over seven years ago that talk of a Danger Girl movie began.
After all this time, Danger Girl finally appears to be moving forward, as THR reports Jeff Wadlow has signed on to direct the live-action film adaptation. Wadlow is no stranger to comic book movies after previously directing Kick-Ass 2, which also featured a young central female hero in Hit-Girl. The Danger Girl movie comes from Constantin Films, who have yet to announce a release date for their latest film. Campbell and Hartnell will receive executive producer credits on the movie.
Wadlow has targeted action and horror films in the past, and Danger Girl will likely fall in the former category. Even beyond Kick-Ass 2, Wadlow was able to deliver on the action in Never Back Down and previously tackled the spy concept with Kevin James’ Netflix film True Memoirs of an International Assassin. He also helmed the box office success Truth or Dare and has teamed up with Blumhouse again for Fantasy Island.
Even though Wadlow has joined Danger Girl, it may still be a while before more news arrives. He’ll be working on Fantasy Island up till its February 2020 release, and with him also set to rewrite the script from Umair Aleem, there is still some work that needs to be done before Danger Girl can move forward further. Once the script is done, then Constantin and Wadlow will be ready to figure out who they can cast as the three main stars and any of their many villains. So, unless additional reports surface that Wadlow will begin work on Danger Girl before he finishes up Fantasy Island, fans of the comic hopeful to see it translated to the big screen may need to prepare to wait a few more years.
