That’s not a trailer, this is a trailer - well, a Danny McBride teaser for Dundee: The Son of a Legend Returns Home.

First hitting theaters in 1986, the original Crocodile Dundee made Paul Hogan a star as the rugged bushman and was a bold attempt to make a commercial Australian movie for mainstream American. It is safe to say that Crocodile Dundee was a huge success and spawned two sequels, but now it looks like the series is back with McBride starring as new character Brian Dundee and searching for his missing father.

As a shock to everyone, a trailer mysteriously appeared online and pits funnyman McBride (Tropic Thunder/Pineapple Express) as the lead. While not exactly filling us with confidence, you will likely walk away from this one with an overarching feeling of “why?”

Set to a picturesque Australian backdrop, the clip doesn’t give much away but does feature Brian repeating his father’s famous “that’s not a knife” from Crocodile Dundee. People has a whole article on the movie, which apparently interviews Hogan himself about returning for a fourth installment. It certainly sounds like the man that is the legend could be coming back à la Mark Hamill in The Force Awakens:

Given that ’80s classics like Ghostbusters, Dirty Dancing, and Footloose have all been given the remake treatment, it was only a matter of time before we headed to the outback once again for some sort of remake/reboot. If you remember movies Ace Ventura Jr. and Son of the Mask - which are officially rated some of the worst movies ever made - the whole young son taking over trope isn’t exactly popular among audiences, but can Son of a Legend fare any better?

“Crocodile Dundee is a film that has stood the test of time. It was a defining moment in my life and one of my proudest accomplishments. Throughout the past few years, I’ve been thinking about how to bring Dundee to a new generation. I’m excited to introduce the new Crocodile Dundee to the world and look forward to sharing more news about those involved very soon.”

The series had seemingly ground to a halt in 2001 with the maligned Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles, which ironically included Mick already having a son called Mikey (played by Serge Cockburn), however, McBride’s character appears to be someone completely different. With the third movie holding just 11% on Rotten Tomatoes, McBride’s version hopefully can’t do much worse. Son of a Legend also has an official website and some slick looking production stills, but is this really legit?

The internet is suitably confused, with some thinking the trailer is fake, others guessing it is some sort of hype for the upcoming Super Bowl, and a loyal band of Dundee fans thinking it is the real deal. Slated for release later this year, it certainly seems like a bit of a stretch that McBride has had the movie greenlit in secret AND managed to shoot it while knee-deep in his Halloween remake. However, stranger things have happened in Hollywood.
