The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is a 10-episode prequel series to the 1982 film, The Dark Crystal, directed by Jim Henson and Frank Oz. The film features impressive puppetry and practical effects, something that the Netflix series only builds on and enhances with today’s technology.
Set years before the events of the film, Netflix’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance season 1 follows three Gelfling as they discover a terrible secret about their overlords, the Skeksis. This unforgivable truth is soon spread among the different Gelfing clans, and by the end of season 1, a full rebellion against the Skeksis begins. Age of Resistance season 2 will presumably continue to develop the Gelfling’s rebellion against the Skeksis, further setting up the events of the original Dark Crystal film.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Season 2 Has Been Canceled
Sadly, despite The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance just recently winning the Emmy for Best Children’s Program, Netflix confirmed on September 21, 2020 that a season 2 won’t be happening. However, hope was expressed about finding a different way to wrap up the story.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Season 2 Story Details
While no official details for The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance season 2 exist, it’s clear from the events of season 1 that a season 2 could’ve gone to many new places. As a prequel to the 1982 film, there is still a good amount of story for further Age of Resistance seasons to explore before reaching the time of The Dark Crystal. Jen’s quest to heal The Dark Crystal is still years away, and in the meantime, Age of Resistance can continue developing the story of the Gelfling-led rebellion. There are also the events of the Garthim War, in which the newly-created Garthim are sent to attack Gelfling villages. The Wall of Destiny is another important relic in the 1982 film that has yet to be revealed on the series, and that, too, would’ve needed to be explored in upcoming seasons of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, had they happened. Not to mention, Age of Resistance introducing its own plot threads that could be further explored in future episodes, like Deet’s fate.

We can only assume that both the actors and puppeteers involved with The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance would’ve returned for season 2 had the series ultimately been renewed. This includes veteran puppeteers of The Jim Henson Company, like Louise Gold and Alice Dinnean, as well as actors like Mark Hamill, Lena Headey, Jason Isaacs, Bill Hader, Helena Bonham Carter, Andy Samberg, and many more.
