New videos for Dark Phoenix have been released, discussing the legacy of the X-Men film series. The final Dark Phoenix trailer premiered last month, promising an emotional plot that has Jean Grey get engulfed by a cosmic force.
The road to Dark Phoenix has been an interesting one. The film continues the story from X-Men: Apocalypse. Dark Phoenix is the final X-Men film created by 20th Century Fox before Disney gained control of the franchise. Interestingly, producer Hutch Parker said Dark Phoenix became the final film naturally, not because Disney acquired the X-Men movie rights. Fox is describing the film as “the most intense and emotional X-Men movie ever made.” Tickets are now on sale.
After setting May 13 as X-Men Day, 20th Century Fox has released three new videos to celebrate the long-running X-Men film series. The first video, titled “The X-Men Legacy,” serves as a reflection of the previous movies. The second video, “Marvel Icons: Chris Claremont & Louise Simonson” talks about the original Dark Phoenix comic book storyline. The final video, “A Phoenix Will Rise,” is a promotional video for the film using clips from the previous movies.
To summarize, much of these videos reflect on the legacy of the X-Men movies. The series began in the year 2000, making it a 19-year run. Many fans have criticized it over the years for its usage of the black leather, or putting too much of an emphasis on Wolverine over the other characters. Nonetheless, a number of these movies have been critically acclaimed. Many viewers still consider X2: X-Men United as one of the greatest superhero movies ever made. X-Men: First Class, and especially Logan, were very well received. (Logan was nominated for an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.)
In the first video, Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman says the"very first X-Men changed comic book movies." This is not a hyperbolic statement, because X-Men really did change the landscape for superhero movies. It was the first team-based comic film, predating the Fantastic Four, Avengers, and Justice League. For Marvel Comics, it was its first critical and commercial success in the cinema. Yes, there was Blade in 1998 of course, but X-Men was better received, and arguably paved the way for the successful superheroes on the big screen today.
Dark Phoenix has the unique role of concluding a 19-year journey, similar to how Avengers: Endgame concluded its 11 year journey. The difference here is that this is the last time we’ll be seeing Fox’s versions of these characters. It remains to be seen if Dark Phoenix will be well received like Days of Future Past, or criticized like the last Phoenix movie, X-Men: The Last Stand.
