Season 2 of Netflix’s German time travel series Dark is on its way, as a new trailer reveals a premiere date and some unpleasant truths about the future. One of the most intriguing and addictive shows to hit the streaming giant in 2017, Dark told an intricately woven story about the lives of several families in a single German town turned upside down (and sometimes inside out) by a bizarre phenomenon involving missing children, murder, nuclear fears, and a recursive time loop that may eventually bring about the apocalypse. In other words, it’s a real trip.
It’s been well over a year since the first season premiered and season 2 was given the official green light by Netflix. Anyone rewatching the series or streaming it for the first time will have likely noticed the reassuring blurb that a second season was indeed on the way. Now, Netflix has decided it’s time to reward the patience of its binge-watching subscribers with a cryptic first glimpse at the new episodes, and a firm date for when the next binge can begin.

The new season has a lot to live up to in terms of follow through, as the season 1 finale ended on quite the cliffhanger. And that came after an avalanche of twists and surprise reveals took the legs out from many of the series’ main characters, including grieving teen Jonas Kahnwald (Louis Hofmann) and detective Ulrich Nielsen (Oliver Masucci). It was the disappearance of the latter’s young son, that kicked off Dark’s central mystery, but a big part of the show’s appeal was in how it expanded well beyond a single question with far-ranging implications. As far as trailer’s go, this one plays around with the twisty nature of the series with great effect. Bouncing backwards and forwards in time and throwing in the odd callback to some of the strangest elements from the still-unravelling story, this first look manages to make it look as though season 2 may be even less straightforward than its predecessor. Add to that the ominous discovery that “the apocalypse must happen,” and it looks as though Dark will be raising the stakes when it picks up again.
As Netflix continues to expand its offering of foreign TV series and movies, Dark may well become one of the service’s most attractive offerings for those who aren’t turned off by the thought of reading subtitles. At any rate, it won’t be long before viewers get another 10 episodes of one Netflix’s most original original series to date.
